The last meeting of 2024 (December 17) brought us a Zoom meeting in which our president, Dirk, shared photos with members from his trip to Kew Gardens in London. After Dirk’s slideshow, members discussed places where they could find more information on cacti and succulents. One of the popular suggestions was the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, which is another club that meets monthly. In addition to information found on their website and Facebook pages, the Cactus and Succulent Society of America also posts recordings of their talks from guests.

We had some official looking guests stop by on March 18th from the Environment and Climate Change Canada department. One of our guests, Jeremy Hunt, is a Wildlife Officer and Wildlife Environment Directorate. Jeremy and his coworker shared with us the ins and outs of paperwork needed for importing and exporting plants. They brought a number of specimens as examples of things that have been confiscated when crossing Canadian borders illegally. They also had a very informative slideshow which listed what type of plants would require which type of documentation and form. Good thing there was no test at the end of the presentation!
If you’re unsure about whether or not you can bring your plant in/out of Canada, you can always call an officer on duty at 1-888-569-5656.
