OCTOBER 15, 2024 MEETING: "The Revolutionary Method for Seed Sowing"

We had a lovely turnout this month for Dirk’s presentation on how Bert Hendricksen (of the Victoria Cactus & Succulent Society) sows his seeds. The trick that Bert uses is quite different from how Dirk does it (as he showed last month). The secret ingredient: Hydrogen Peroxide! What is hydrogen peroxide? It’s a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. So how do you use it? Well, place your pot into a ziplock bag then spray the soil twenty times with straight hydrogen peroxide. Be sure not to spray yourself! After that, pour 3% diluted with water hydrogen peroxide into the ziplock bag, outside of the pot. Finally, just zip it up! Dirk explained that this method creates a sort of self-contained terrarium. What’s great is that the hydrogen peroxide will also kill algae and bugs which often grow in seedling containers. The only thing the chemical compound won’t kill are your growing plants!
